Things to Know About Budgie Training

Budgie is the nickname or informal name for budgerigar. This is a small, long-tailed seed-eating parrot that is common in drier areas of Australia. It is typically color green with black bars on its tail.

Budgies have the capacity to mimic or imitate speech so they can be taught in a “parrot-fashion” way. They are usually easy to tame but there are some also that are not. Others are sensitive and sweet, while some are also stubborn and mischievous to cause some trouble.

It is easy to tame a budgie if acquired at an early age. This will establish deeper relationship between the pet-owner and the budgie. It is like parenting a child that, when properly cared will develop into a happy and cheerful individual.

To develop further the innate entertaining trait for budgies, one should first establish to the budgie that you are a friend. They are prey animals so they are very defensive and naturally stay away from other animals or people. You should make the budgie feel that you are a member of his group.

Next is to make the budgie get familiar with your hands. You pet should learn and get used with your hands. Sit near the cage and then extend your hand inside and making it steady as you talk with the budgie and befriend the bird. This will make the budgie approach you and will not fly away during feeding or training time.

One should train a budgie individually. Budgies get easily distracted and they will get interested with other budgies rather than paying attention to the exercises, if joined with others. It is also effective to train them one by one so that you can keenly observe the behavior and learn necessary approaches towards it.

Introduce step up and finger training with your budgie. You can do step up exercises by using a dowel perch and putting it lightly on the budgie’s stomach and “step up”. You have to do it again and again until the bird will understand and remember the command.

After the budgie have learned the “step up” stick training, teach the animal with finger training. This is almost the same with stick training, but you will be using your finger instead of the stick.

If you are so close with your budgie and the budgie have been used with the “step up and finger” exercises, continue the activity in an enclosed room. This is a little harder to do because you have to clear the place from all obstructions and danger.

Continue the exercises and be patient. Never give up when budgie’s become stubborn. Have patience in outwitting the bird. Motivate your bird by treating good food after an accomplished performance.

Lovebird Training – 3 Very Important Steps to Train a Lovebird Successfully

For lovebird training, there are 3 very important steps to follow in order to be successful. A lot of bird owners aren’t aware of a parrots potential, especially those that own a parrot that doesn’t typically learn to talk. Lovebirds are able to learn many things though, and by spending time with them regularly, you can end up with a bird that knows far more than just how to sit in a cage.

1. Favorite Treat: As with any pet, positive reinforcement works best. With birds, having their favorite treat on hand will increase the chances for success when teaching them a new trick. Smaller birds love millet, medium size birds like sunflower seeds and larger parrots may even prefer nuts; it is important to learn what treat your bird likes the best and have that ready for when they have done what you’ve asked.

2. Reward Often: Treat giving can’t be overdone; whether you choose food or love, give your bird a reward whenever they have done something successfully. Reward even the smallest desired behavior and your bird will quickly associate the two together. If you ask your bird to wave and they lift their foot, hand over the treats and congratulate them with a “good bird”, or whatever term of endearment you choose.

3. Consistency: Birds are the same as any animal you are trying to train and consistency is incredibly important if you want to successfully train your lovebird. Have a specific time set aside each day that is “training” time and have your treats on hand. If your bird is starting to use props, have all of those items ready to go too. Handling your lovebird everyday at first is very important, gaining trust and establishing a training routine will help move the process along quickly. Your bird will probably even start to anticipate your time together.

In this article we talked about lovebird training and 3 steps you can take to successfully train a lovebird.
